Introduction
South African wine has a history dating back to 1659, is considered one of the greatest wines in the world. Production is concentrated around Cape Town, with major vineyard and production is certers at Paarl, Stellenbosch and Worcester.
South African is located at the tip of the African continent with most wine regions located near the coastal influences of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These regions have mostly a Mediteranean climate that is marked by intense sunlight and dry. The wine regions of South African are spread out over the Western and Northern Cape regions, covering 500 kilometres west to east and 680 kilometres north-south. Within this wide expanse is a vast range of macroclimate and vineyard soil types influenced by the unique geography of the area which includes several inland mountain chains and valleys. Therefore, the Mediterranean like climate and geography makes the variety of the wines.
Veenwouden Wine Cellar is situated on the northern side of Paarl
on the Paarl/Wellington Road, with spectacular views over the Klein
Drakenstein Mountains in South Africa. Veenwouden, a Boutique
winery, where care, patience and pride is taken to produce our
wines, is wholly contained within a valley, and the vineyards lie on
a gentle slope, facing northeast toward the Berg River.
From the Atlantic Ocean, some 60 kilometres away, cool breezes
penetrate the valley to influence the local climate in an almost
Mediterranean way. The cool rich ferrous clay subsoil of Veenwouden
is quite unique for this area, and fortuitously happens to be superb
soil especially for the growth of Merlot and Cabernet Franc grape.
Together with the excellent micro climate found on the farm,
Veenwouden provides an environment in which the grapes can flourish,
ensuring the highest possible quality.
Premium Quality
Our Passion and Pride
Veenwouden believes in producing the best quality wine, and thus
high levels of quality control as well as limited production
quantities are central to our core business practices. We are proud
to maintain its status as an eminent premium and classic wine brand
in the global wine market.
Our chief winemaker is trained in France-Bordeaux in the art of
producing wines with both old and new world tastes. In the early
nineties he was one of the icons in winemaking from South Africa.
Our Merlot is renowned as the Petrus of South Africa, comparable to
the Chateau Petrus in France which is selling at a premium price per
bottle. This accolade was achieved through a blind taste test called
"Dance around the Petrus”. In this competition, Veenwouden Merlot
was recognised as the world’s top 24 best wines.
We are proud to announce that Veenwouden red wine has won Gold again
in Switzerland in 2013. It is also the only red wine in South
African history to be chosen for the Nobel Peace Prize Gala dinner.
